PAST TENSE | BEN HORTON

10月12日(金)渋谷の RVCA STORE 2Fに併設されるギャラリーにて、「PAST TENSE」と題したANPアーティストのBen Horton(ベン・ホートン)によるソロアート・エキシビションののオープニングレセプションが開催されました。

廃材や19世紀の古紙、楽譜などをを使用したミックスメディアによる30点にも及ぶ作品の展示は見応えたっぷり。Bintang Beerを片手にアーティスト本人より作品にまつわるストーリーや秘話を聞くというとてもプライスレスな時間に、会場は終始とても和やかな雰囲気。

10月12日(金)から RVCA SHIBUYA 2F GALLERY にて Ben Horton(ベン・ホートン)が来日しエキシビションを開催します。初日の12日(金)は、どなたでも参加できるオープニングパーティーを開催。アーティスト本人も参加予定なのでお見逃しなく。

- PAST TENSE -

今回私がみなさんにご紹介する作品は、過去にあった古いアイディアに自分の中を通り過ぎた新たな考えを差し込んで、違う表現を再構築することを試みました。その結果に現れた色は、灰色でした。しかしその灰色領域の中で私は、過去、現在、未来への新たなる理解と共に出現する、新しい着想を発見しました。 自分の中で常に、何かを追い求め続ける心を持って制作した過去の作品を織り交ぜながら現在の作品とも融合し、19世紀、20世紀中盤の廃材や紙を使用したミックスメディアもあります。皆様に楽しんでいただけると光栄です – Ben Horton

15年以上ものスケーター人生を送っていた彼だが、アーティストとして初めてその名を広めたのは、彼がスケートボードのデッキに描いたグラフィックがきっかけであった。彼の作品のアイディアは写真や彼自身の人生経験から作り出され、そこに描かれる深みや親しみ、そしてどこか懐かしさのあるキャラクターたちの持つ表情や視線はとてもリアルで見るものを不思議な感覚にする。中でも鳥をテーマにすることが多く、彼によって描き出された鳥たちはまるで息吹を吹き込まれたかのような躍動感溢れるものである。そしてまた画材にはこだわらず、アクリル絵の具やペンキ、インク、シャーペンなど身近にある物を使ってあらゆるものに作品を描くといった彼のアートへの開拓はこれからも注目すべきところだ。

On the Edge of A Dream | Ellis Ericson

September 28 RVCA HQ hosted the premiere of Ellis Ericson & Andrew Kidman's surf film, On The Edge of A Dream. Ellis & Kidman have kicked off a USA premiere tour to celebrate the release of their new film. The project

For the past five years, Ellis Ericson and Andrew Kidman have been working with George Greenough on the modern evolution of his Edge Board design.

Ericson and Kidman are both shapers; the book and film chart their journey as they work with Greenough to personalise their own equipment with a design George have been toying around with since the late ‘60s.

Shot in Australia on the North Coast of New South Wales it features the original venues Lennox Head and Angourie where Greenough’s innovative Edge designs were tested in the early ‘70s.

Barry McGee's SB Mid Summer Intensive at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara is winding down and the exhibition will end October 14. Kelsey Brookes Exhibition | Fibonacci Waveforms and Capsid Symmetries

September 29th marked the opening reception of ANP artist Kelsey Brookes exhibition at Quint Gallery, titled "Fibonacci, Waveforms, and Capsid Symmetries" in San Diego, California. Kelsey Brookes has been making sculptures for most of 2018. "It's been an eye-opening experience and a mostly enjoyable process."The show's title (noted as a mouthful by the Kelsey) Fibonacci, Waveforms, and Capsid Symmetries" features vibrant, colourful sculptures made/painted using mathematics and science. Inspired by the Italian mathematician, Fibonacci , considered to be "the most talented Western mathematician of the Middle Ages". Fibonacci is most notable for creating the Fibonacci Sequence. "The order goes as follows: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144 and on to infinity. Each number is the sum of the previous two. This series of numbers is known as the Fibonacci numbers or the Fibonacci sequence. The ratio between the numbers (1.618034) is frequently called the golden ratio or golden number." - How Stuff Works

More about this exhibition from the artist himself, "Viruses can be organized using many different features, for my upcoming show at Quint Gallery. I am focusing in on a broad morphological classification system usgin capsid symmetry as a starting point to create these paintings/scupltures. My past career as a microbiologist really coming in handy a decade later. You really never know here life will take you, do you?"

Moments At Home | Charles Collet

Having spent 20 years skateboarding, a decade of which included pro status, CharlesCollet recently found himself questioning the next steps in his career. Having always shown a keen passion for woodworking, Charles spent the last year studying the art of marquetry in his hometown of Grenoble. Having moved west to Bordeaux upon graduating, we caught up with Charles in his humble new abode to discuss life, skateboarding and his new found love for craftsmanship.
